Monica glanced down at the semi-translucent paper with the instructions, looking so deceptively simple, a simple touch here and there, six words...but once done...
"Now, I'm gonna read some words..." she bent down a bit so she was nearer the child's eye level, hopefully this would be a bit less frightening for him this way, "...and uh, they won't make any sense, but I want you to listen to them anyway, and look at me all the time, can you do that?"

"Okay now, look at me?" she glanced at the instructions once more.
"Ready?"she got no reply from the child, but he seemed calm enough, so she proceeded as instructed...
Slowly, she began reading the string of words aloud.
"Cirrus. Socrates. "she looked, worried at the boy's face, no sign of change. " Particle. Decibel." she continued. "Hurricane. Dolphin. Tulip. Monica, David, Monica. "
She waited, nothing seemed to have happened.
"All right. I wonder if I did that right, I don't.."

David sat there patiently as Monica recited the words.
As she said the last word, 'Monica', something overcame David. He felt different inside, as if he was just feeling everything about himself for the first time.

"Mommy" it had been--years since she had heard those words, coming out of a child's mouth, directed at her, the little robot boy slid of his seat and gave her a hug, something which surprised her, but then she wrapped her arms around the child, squeezing him, and holding him close as well.
